Analyse Of Opening Scene - Mission Impossible Rogue Nation
In the opening scene of Rogue Nation it starts with establishing shot. This is off a field and is to show where the scene will be taking place. Natural lighting is used to show how the scene reflects the atmosphere of the outdoors. In this scene Benji appears and starts talking about the mission he has to complete. This is done to attempt to tell you what will happen but not how it will as you discover that through out the scene. Diegtic sound of speech is used in this scene in order to communicate with his work colleagues. Text is added to the scene in order to show where abouts the action takes place (Minsk,Belarus). point of view shots are also used by the camera looking through some high tech binoculars linking to a key convention of spy films gadgets.
It then cuts to William where he is giving Benji Commands in order to complete the mission. This is a new scene in orders where artificial lighting is used but very lightly as the room is very dull and dark and lacks colour. Will is very forceful and is putting Benji under pressure in order to complete the mission by retrieving the items required. Point of view shots are also used by the camera looking through some high tech binoculars, that Benji is using, linking to a key convention of spy films gadgets. It the cuts to an establishing shot of a Malaysian city where another agent, Luther, is on top of a sky scraper also trying to help out Benji. In this scene we see various whips and whip pans when Luther is attempting to hack into a Russian satellite dish in order for Benji to gain access to all controls of the plane about to leave. Here again in this scene Luther's location is using Natrual lighting as he is outdoors again. Will and Benji were surprised that Luther was even in on the mission despite being on his own making sense of him being in Malaysia All panic is taking place and non-diegetic sound is used through music to show this as well as close ups, medium close ups and mid shots showing the characters body and facial expressions as very stressed and under pressure to complete the mission.
All of a sudden, Ethan turns up as a crane shot heads towards him and and a low angle long shot. This suggesting he is the hero in order to end this panic and absolute mess. This leads to the characters to be shocked he is even at the location and also in on the mission. Ethan commands Benji to open the doors to the plane door as he is unable to stop the engine of the plane. This leads to Ethan jumping on the plane and making his way round to the side door. As this happens several Long shots are used to see the movement of Ethan and how he gets there. This is done with various camera movements too. Lots of tracking, pan and still shots are used to show how hard and the intensity of Ethan's mission. This has music that is very lively and makes out Ethan to be a hero and the main man. This leads to Ethan hanging on for dear life from the door of the plane which still hasn't been opened by Benji and the plane is taking place. This cuts to reaction close up shots of Benji and Will as they see Ethan on the side of the plane. Lots of panic taking place as diegetic sound of the plane makes it hard for Ethan to communicate with his team and his team pressuring and hurrying Benji to open the door as well. Also, music (non-diegetic) is added too in order to make the scene tense as Ethan hangs on to the plane a long way from the ground. A green screen is used in order for this to take place otherwise Tom Cruise would of died. However, it is done to make it realistic as possible without any Injuries.
Finally, Benji opens the door, but the wrong one, this causing panic again as the plane is getting higher and higher and Ethan's still holding on the side of the plane. Straight away Benji opens the correct door causing Ethan to fly into it bouncing off the walls. A pan follows this movement of his body being rag dolled. This then cuts to a close up of his face and reaction shot of him being relived that he is alive. It then cuts back to a man on board the plane with the item they're after. A close up of the man shows state of confusion to why the doors are open. He then turns to get the controls to close the door and it doesn't work again the man is confused. The mans face was in utter shock and confusion to how Ethan possibly made it on the plane when he discovers him. But Ethan has parachutes around the items required and sets off with the parachute out the door Benji opened by accident. It then cuts to the title sequence creating a bit of suspense to does the mission end well or not.
