Analyse Of Opening Scene - Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

Analyse Of Opening Scene - Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

In the opening scene of Rogue Nation it starts with establishing shot. This is off a field and is to show where the scene will be taking place. Natural lighting is used to show how the scene reflects the atmosphere of the outdoors. In this scene Benji appears and starts talking about the mission he has to complete. This is done to attempt to tell you what will happen but not how it will as you discover that through out the scene. Diegtic sound of speech is used in this scene in order to communicate with his work colleagues. Text is added to the scene in order to show where abouts the action takes place (Minsk,Belarus). point of view shots are also used by the camera looking through some high tech binoculars linking to a key convention of spy films gadgets.

It then cuts to William where he is giving Benji Commands in order to complete the mission. This is a new scene in orders where artificial lighting is used but very lightly as the room is very dull and dark and lacks colour. Will is very forceful and is putting Benji under pressure in order to complete the mission by retrieving the items required. Point of view shots are also used by the camera looking through some high tech binoculars, that Benji is using, linking to a key convention of spy films gadgets. It the cuts to an establishing shot of a Malaysian city where another agent, Luther, is on top of a sky scraper also trying to help out Benji. In this scene we see various whips and whip pans when Luther is attempting to hack into a Russian satellite dish in order for Benji to gain access to all controls of the plane about to leave. Here again in this scene Luther's location is using Natrual lighting as he is outdoors again. Will and Benji were surprised that Luther was even in on the mission despite being on his own making sense of him being in Malaysia All panic is taking place and non-diegetic sound is used through music to show this as well as close ups, medium close ups and mid shots showing the characters body and facial expressions as very stressed and under pressure to complete the mission.

All of a sudden, Ethan turns up as a crane shot heads towards him and and a low angle long shot. This suggesting he is the hero in order to end this panic and absolute mess. This leads to the characters to be shocked he is even at the location and also in on the mission. Ethan commands Benji to open the doors to the plane door as he is unable to stop the engine of the plane. This leads to Ethan jumping on the plane and making his way round to the side door. As this happens several Long shots are used to see the movement of Ethan and how he gets there. This is done with various camera movements too. Lots of tracking, pan and still shots are used to show how hard and the intensity of Ethan's mission. This has music that is very lively and makes out Ethan to be a hero and the main man. This leads to Ethan hanging on for dear life from the door of the plane which still hasn't been opened by Benji and the plane is taking place. This cuts to reaction close up shots of Benji and Will as they see Ethan on the side of the plane. Lots of panic taking place as diegetic sound of the plane makes it hard for Ethan to communicate with his team and his team pressuring and hurrying Benji to open the door as well. Also, music (non-diegetic) is added too in order to make the scene tense as Ethan hangs on to the plane a long way from the ground. A green screen is used in order for this to take place otherwise Tom Cruise would of died. However, it is done to make it realistic as possible without any Injuries.

Finally, Benji opens the door, but the wrong one, this causing panic again as the plane is getting higher and higher and Ethan's still holding on the side of the plane. Straight away Benji opens the correct door causing Ethan to fly into it bouncing off the walls. A pan follows this movement of his body being rag dolled. This then cuts to a close up of his face and reaction shot of him being relived that he is alive. It then cuts back to a man on board the plane with the item they're after. A close up of the man shows state of confusion to why the doors are open. He then turns to get the controls to close the door and it doesn't work again the man is confused. The mans face was in utter shock and confusion to how Ethan possibly made it on the plane when he discovers him. But Ethan has parachutes around the items required and sets off with the parachute out the door Benji opened by accident. It then cuts to the title sequence creating a bit of suspense to does the mission end well or not.

Overall, Mission Impossible Rogue Nation's opening scene was made out to be intense and realistic in order for the audience to be engaged. This was done by sound with diegetic sound making the atmosphere around realistic and non-diegtic sound to make the scene feel tense. Mise-en-scene mad the opening scene seem realistic with the spys being in suits and using gadgets as well as Benji in a camouflage costume to keep hidden. Also, the stunts were done to make it seem realistic and tense as the audience were willing for the good to win the battle. Camera angles/ movement were done to reflect the intensity and mood of characters in the scene. Finally, The editing made it feel tense the cuts started to speed up as the plane was getting away and slowed down when ethan was on board the plane.

Analyse Of Opening Scene- James Bond Quantum Of Solace

Analyse Of Opening Scene- James Bond Quantum Of Solace

In the opening scene of Quantum Of solace it starts with a establishing long shot to show where the scene is taking place. In this establishing shot non-diegetic sound in music is added and is very slow and calm for the time being as well as natural lighting being used to portray the atmosphere in the scene as very dull and negative. It starts to gradually do cuts between the crane shot of the establishing shot to close ups of Daniel Craig and his car. Diegtic sound of James Bond's car engine is heard and is very powerful and loud suggesting he is in a hurry.

Various of these cuts between the establishing shot and James bond and his car speed up and the music builds to build up in speed too. It then turns into high speed car chase where James Bond is being chased by the villains. It involves many more conventions of a spy film, bar the high speed car chase and binary oppositions, it involves guns too. This happens during the high speed car chase constantly. While this takes place several jump cuts take place to show the intensity of the chase. Various close ups of Daniel Craig's face shows the reaction of how intense the car chase is as he is very focused and has to concentrate in order to shake off the villains. Also, mid shots of Daniel Craig are used to to see what he's doing quickly during the scene of various jump cuts i.e. changing gear or turning rapidly. Tracking shots are used to follow the cars movement from the side and still shots to show the pace the cars are going at. When the lorry makes impact with James Bond's car the camera shakes. This is done as it would be realistic that the car would shake during the collision. Most of these camera angles and edits are used to make it a realistic and as if the audience were there.

As the chase leaves the tunnel it a lot more long shots are used as well as extreme long shots. This is done to show they have more room to move in as the tunnels are narrow. This also allows you to take in the surroundings of the new scene. I.e. examples of extreme long shots are used as they enter the quarry to show the risk James Bond puts himself at to escape the villains. Also, the editing changes as when one of the villain cars is destroyed or crashes it lasts on screen for two seconds in order to show the audience he's lost one compared to the other one second shots used consistently. The scene becomes more intense as the police get involved and join the high speed chase. This adds to the long list of diegetic sound (Police sirens, car mechanics, crashes, gun fire, police radio and explosions). The non-diegetic sound (music) continues and is still tense. When the final car is shaken off the jump cuts stop and there is a long shot of the final car falling down the hill to show Bond has escaped the villain purist. In addition to the crash many prop would've been used to allow this i.e. the last car crash crashes into a railing which snaps and the car falls of the edge. A weak railing would've been used to make the railing snap allowing the car to fall of the edge as well as a crash mat at the bottom to stop the car falling all the way done the cliff fully.

It then cuts to Bond driving a car that is broken with missing doors, bumps and scratches. It then has a crane shot and establishing shot of Vienna, Italy showing the audience where the scene has taken place and will continue to. It then cuts to a low key dark tunnel where the car drives down. which contrasts the natural lighting with various colours used during the chase scene. It shows Bond get out the car and open the boot with a hostage in it. The only dialogue he uses in the scene saying ' time to get out' which adds a sense of humour to the audience as Bond acts like nothing happened as he was calm and joked about it which contrasts to the man who is clearly unaware of whats happened and a nervous wreck. It then cuts to the opening titles marking the end of the opening scene.

Overall, the scene is a realistic and makes you feel the intensity. Camera angles/movements do this by showing us Bond's reactions and the damage caused. The editing of jump cuts shows the speed and intensity as each shot lasted around about a second. The sound was realistic as lots of diegtic sound was used and the non-diegtic sound made it more intense with the music. Finally, The mise en scene made the scene realistic with costumes, props and the lighting used to create the scenario.

Target Audience

Target Audience:

The mainstream viewers are of the male gender. This is due to the more masculine actions that take place in the film such as fighting, cars, weapons e.t.c. Age ranges depend on certain spy films. For example, James Bond has been around since 1962 which appeals to age ranges from children to the elderly as it has been in the lime light for years. However, more recent spy films such as Kingsman would appeal to teenagers due to the fact it doesn't have the presentation, age and popularity as the James bond series. This proving that the audience varies depending on the film. The class it would appeal to is middle and upper class as spy films mainly focus on luxurious lifestyle of a spy and the expensive gear that is used. However, some working class people do watch it too but mainstream watchers are of middle and upper class. It appeals to races as it is a popular genre and enjoyed by everyone.
